To these students the Chinese Calendar, divisions of time, cyclical characters, use of native Dictionaries and the principal philosophical systems of China. For some of these Students, and especially Mr. Northate, I corrected from time to time written exercises they made of their own accord in translating from Chinese into English or vice versa.
I refrain from making any change in the system I adopted two years ago, until H.M. Government have finally decided as to the whole scheme of Chinese studies.
The interest which the Students originally displayed when they were under the impression that some substantial advantages might eventually be derived from success in these studies has considerably abated. Although most of them appeared to continue their studies as a matter of duty, none of them has made that progress during the past year which might have been expected.
